I know why they call this guy Arthur Laffer. It's because he's a laugh-a-minute, gaffe-a-minute guy.
Laffer is a former Reagan adviser who lent his name to the Laffer curve - which absurdly claims that lowering taxes would increase tax revenues. So I guess he's both a comedian and a magician, huh?
Earlier, Laffer had helped write the California property tax cap that later led to eminent domain abuse, helped ruin the state's economy, and contributed to the state's current budget crisis. Which I guess wasn't so funny.
Now he's made a big funny on CNN.
In an appearance on the struggling cable network, Laffer said, "If you like the Post Office and the Department of Motor Vehicles, and you think they're run well, just wait till you see Medicare, Medicaid, and health care done by the government."
Uh, Arthur? Medicare and Medicaid are already run by the government, you idiot.
Did anyone at CNN challenge Laffer's statement? Of course not. After CNN swallowed every ounce of official propaganda during the '91 Gulf War, I've always cast a suspicious eye on the network.
Laffer should have been laughed right out of the newsroom for saying something so stupid.
Here's what we should be saying any time some conservative suggests privatizing Medicare: If you think the corporate, for-profit health care system is run well, just wait until you see what it would do to Medicare. With the for-profit system as bad as it is, a lot of people wouldn't even live long enough to find out.
