Man jailed because adult daughter didn't get GED

How silly is this?

A man from Fairfield, Ohio, has been jailed for 180 days all because his daughter - who is going on 19 - has failed to get her GED.

Why??? Even in Ohio, you're an adult once you turn 18, and the minimum age for being pushed out of school is at most 18. Yet the father is being jailed for contributing to the delinquency of a minor???

Do the laws even mean what they say anymore? It's impossible to contribute to the delinquency of a minor when the "minor" is 18. This is like the time NKU charged me with "trespassing" on public property.

What makes the punishment even sillier is that the 18-year-old has in fact been going to classes. She just hasn't passed the GED yet.

Now, because he's going to jail, the father will probably lose his job he's had for 15 years. And that's going to place more burden on the system once he's released, because then he'll have to collect unemployment until he finds a new job. But hey, that doesn't matter to the system when the more important thing is flexing undue control in any way possible.

It boils down to the same old story of the "one size fits all" capitalist education system being considered perfect. These days, not passing a test is viewed as an unforgivable sin, and the system has to blame someone for it. A big, red 'F' on your report card really is considered a mark of lifelong discredit in modern America: My experience is that the system will stigmatize you for life if your academic record isn't satisfactory. And it looks like now they're punishing the parents too, even when their child is grown.

  1. This is a horrible travesty and I feel the same way you do. I posted the article on my little blog and the sister of the jailed man posted a comment. It is very insightful..please feel free to check it out at:

I also have a link to email the Gov there...maybe if enough people say something he'll have the common sense to let the man go.
