Austerity kills Kentucky children

Just thought you'd like to know just how deadly austerity is to families in the Bluegrass State.

This year in Kentucky, thousands of low-income families - largely the working poor - will stop receiving state assistance for child care. Plus, starting in April, no new applicants to the program will be accepted.

The Kentucky Department of Community Based Services says this is necessary because of a budget shortfall. Much of this shortfall is fueled by cuts in federal funding.

The government can afford to pay for needless wars and Wall Street bailouts, but it can't afford child care for hard-working families? This isn't only austerity. It's selective austerity. "Austerity for thee, not for me", if you will.

Austerity is shorthand for forcing the 99% to pay for the mistakes of the 1%. And austerity's body count only gets larger.
