Let's play another exciting game of "guess the party affiliation"!
The article I saw about this incident fails to mention what party former California congressional candidate Tan Nguyen is a member of. But I had a hunch just from the article.
Nguyen's 2006 campaign sent out a Spanish-language mailing threatening immigrants with prison and deportation if they voted. Roughly translated, it said, "You are advised that if your residence in this country is illegal or you are an immigrant, voting in a federal election is a crime that could result in imprisonment, and you will be deported for voting without having the right to do so."
This is an outright falsehood though. Legal immigrants who become citizens may vote. So this mailing was nothing more than a voter intimidation tactic.
Ironically, Nguyen himself is an immigrant from Vietnam. So if he was to believe his own mailing, he wouldn't be allowed to vote himself (although he is a citizen).
Nguyen blamed the incident on a campaign staffer, but state investigators found that Nguyen was personally involved. Despite this, he continued denying knowing anything about it.
Now Nguyen has been indicted by a federal jury on charges that he intentionally misled the investigators.
So what party is he? From his vote suppression efforts and his obstruction of the investigation, you can probably guess. He's a Republican. Of course.
