National Guard war call-up biggest since World War II

Lately the wingnutosphere has been screaming louder about how great the war has been going lately - even though 2007 has been the deadliest year yet in that conflict. As a rule, the louder they yell, the wronger they are.

As the war continues to go as badly as ever, the military has now given the Ohio National Guard its biggest call-up since World War II. Some 1,600 Ohio Guard troops are being sent to Kuwait or war-torn Iraq. This is over one-tenth the total strength of the Ohio Guard.

If there's some major disaster in Ohio next year like a flood, who's going to help out, with so many Guard troops away fighting Bush's war? This year there's been some severe flooding, and if there's another year like 1997, the Buckeye State is going to need all the help it can get.

This bullshit has to stop, and it has to stop now. Ohio and the other states need to step up to the plate this instant and order their Guard troops back home. The National Guard is needed first and foremost for domestic disasters - not failed foreign wars.

  1. While it's true 2007 was the deadliest year of the war for U.S. troops, you omitted the part about violence in Iraq dropping since troop numbers were increased this summer. December's 22 U.S. and allied forces fatalities were the lowest monthly death toll of the war. By comparison, 131 were killed in May.

  2. He didn't omit it, because it never happened.

Violence hasn't been "dropping since the summer"....it didn't drop until December.

There would be 0 troop fatalities if America pulled out of the war, so how is 22 an improvement over the way things were before the war?? It isn't.

Personally I'd take any article that claims there's a "safer Baghdad" with a grain of salt.

  3. I take anything I haven't witnessed myself with a grain of salt. That Reuters story says the military says attacks have dropped 60% since June. Associated Press stories have noted a drop off in violence in recent months as well.

It may have been best if we'd never invaded Iraq, but what's done is done. An abrupt and premature exit could lead to the war spilling over into neighboring countries. That's an especially bad scenario if it spread to Saudi Arabia.

  6. Yes I do realize that, but he doesn't realize he looks stupider every time he opens his mouth to defend old Smirks.

So let's enjoy watching him fumble.
