School wastes state money on athletic department

Lovely. Kentucky taxpayers just provided $60,000 to a school's athletic department with money that was supposed to be used on academics.

A state legislator secured $120,000 for academic projects at Phelps High School in Pike County. But when the school received the money, it promptly squandered half of this sum on its sports program - even though the money wasn't meant to be used for that.

Instead of textbooks and library equipment, $60,000 went to team jerseys, mascot costumes, and other athletic expenses.

Furthermore, other money included in this earmark went to various items including ice cream snacks and hair ribbons that the school was unable to account for.

This is our tax money, folks.
