McCain opposes veterans' college aid bill

Why oh why would John McCain oppose a bill to expand college benefits for America's heroic veterans?

McCain is a Vietnam vet and a former POW, so it boggles the mind that he'd oppose the bill. His opposition to the bill is just so clearly a case of political extortion by party overlords that you almost wish you never pulled yourself out of bed today to read about such an outrage.

The Republicans' presumptive presidential nominee claims to be such a mavericky guy and all - but more and more lately, he's been taking obviously partisan positions because the party bosses tell him to. (Bush opposes the bill too. Surprise, surprise, huh?)

By opposing the measure, McCain just handed his election opponents a huge issue to clobber him with. That the Republican forces of doom can get away with pressuring someone like John McCain into opposing such an important bill just shows how entrenched the GOP machine is. Ironically, this may contribute to their undoing.
