Arizona lawmakers reject Real ID

Come on, Kentucky, I know you can do it! (Or could have done it if the legislature hadn't wasted time on useless nonsense before adjourning for the year.)

The Arizona Senate has just voted 21 to 7 to reject implementation of Real ID. For those of you who have been leaning back in your seats all year making flexagons that show how many times one is going to get laid each weekend instead of paying attention to this marvelous blog, Real ID is the Bush regime's attempt to mandate a national ID card by making driver's licenses conform to national rules. Without a conforming ID, folks won't even be allowed to fly on a plane or enter federal buildings.

Real ID is clearly unconstitutional on several fronts. Among them, it violates privacy protections and the powers of the states.

Many states are furious over Real ID - but now it looks like Arizona may be the latest to reject this fascism. Now the bill to rebuff Real ID goes back to the Arizona House for another vote and to Gov. Janet Napolitano to be signed into law.

Luckily, Napolitano is a Democrat, so it's all the more likely she'll sign it. (The DLC hasn't completely taken over the party yet.) Minnesota lawmakers just passed a transportation bill that would have rejected Real ID - but Minnesota's right-wing Gov. Tim Pawlenty, a Republican, vetoed the bill because it snubbed Real ID. Pawlenty's excuses for vetoing it sounded like they were screengrabbed straight from a Michael Chertoff tirade.

If states don't stand up against Real ID, the corporate empire will win again - a fate Americans can't afford.
