Ohioans may get to vote on sick days

An Ohio organization wants voters in the Buckeye State to decide whether larger businesses have to provide paid sick days to workers.

The group got enough signatures to present the matter to state lawmakers. The Republican-dominated legislature (which never takes much interest in ideas that help working families) ignored the measure. But now the group needs thousands more signatures to place the issue on the November ballot. If it passes, businesses with 25 employees or more would have to give at least 7 paid sick days a year.

It's about damn time. You'd think no business in its right mind would want people coming in to work sick and spreading germs around, but common sense doesn't seem to be in long supply in the corporate world these days. But Big Business opposes the proposal because...it costs them money. Waaaaah.

This measure needs to become law.

  1. Sounds good, except Ohio is already having trouble attracting and retaining employers (largely due to high taxes). Mandating additional costs for businesses won't help change that.

  2. I've done my research and according to studies it will actually save employers money because it will reduce the number of illnesses in the office. Its called presenteeism, check it out.
