Teacher fired for "wizardry"

Modern America must be the only society in the history of the world to become progressively more ignorant over a 30-year span. When I saw this story, I couldn't believe it wasn't from the Puritans' era.

In Pasco County, Florida, a substitute teacher showed middle school students a neat little magic trick. In this amazing 30-second trick, he made a toothpick disappear and reappear, in a manner much like that of the magicians you used to see in primetime specials.

It was all in good fun. You'd think not one person would've been offended by a magic trick. But in BushAmerica, conservatives see offense in everything. And I mean everything. The instructor later got a call telling him he was being accused of "wizardry." He showed up at the office and was promptly fired over the charge - even though he never had any infractions before.

Remember the late Doug Henning? He was a magician who always talked about how magic was really just illusions! Apparently, however, the school actually thought the teacher's trick was a sign of some sort of real magic powers. That's how far removed from reality the school administrators are.

I'm amazed a school would be so superstitious that it thinks a magic trick is real and fires a teacher over "wizardry." If things continue at this rate, they're going to start burning people at the stake for witchcraft again. Seriously. There's "values voter" types all over America who believe some craaaaazy shit!

The Pasco County Schools defend the firing under the "at-will" excuse, claiming they can fire the teacher for any reason they want. But that doesn't wash. I'm a hard-working, pro-labor type of guy, and I don't take cues from the likes of the Heritage Foundation in judging what employers should be allowed to do.

I hope the teacher's next magic trick is making part of the school's bank account disappear in a lawsuit requesting reimbursement for the wrongful termination.
