'Lawrence Welk Show' hilarity

Since this is a weekend, and you don't want to read about politics, you can rest easy knowing that 'The Lawrence Welk Show' is a whole new world just itching to be poked fun at.

To be honest, I don't remember ever seeing this series when it first aired. But everything I have seen of this show since then has been roll-on-the-floor uproarious!

YouTube is full of guffaw-inducing 'Lawrence Welk Show' performances - each one more hilarious than the previous. When I found this tuba-based number from a 1974 episode, I nearly fell out of my chair in laughter:

Assuming Facebook hasn't fixed its long-running YouTube embedding problem yet, you can find that clip here:

Richard Maloof - the tuba player with the big sideburns - looks utterly goofy as he cradles back and forth. The singer in this segment, Mary Lou Metzger, looks perhaps sillier, as she dances around and tries climbing over the instrument.

She actually appears as if she's been injected with some very strong psychotropic drugs! This is especially noticeable near the end where she displays almost a zombie-like expression.

At that point, you can even hear the studio audience laughing!

Now we know why so many stations preempted popular network programming for 'The Lawrence Welk Show'!
