What I'd say if I was Eliot Spitzer

New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, a Democrat, has been long known as a fighter for consumer rights and against corporate corruption. He's been nationally famous at least since he was the state's Attorney General.

As far as Spitzer's prostitution scandal is concerned, I'm going to assume that all he did was hire a prostitute. I've seen no evidence that he's done anything more. Of course, hypocritical prudes are demanding Spitzer be damn near hanged high over this. But if I was Eliot Spitzer, here's what I'd say:

"Greetings! I did what I did, and if some hypocrites want me to resign over it...TOUGH SHIT!!! Thank you."

Bear in mind that Spitzer was caught because of a federal wiretap of his phone. I have to question the legality of the wiretap, because the Bush regime hasn't been too concerned about making sure wiretaps fall inside the confines of the law. And why were they tapping his phone at all? Is this yet another politically motivated effort? (Here's a hint: Yes.)

If Spitzer doesn't resign within 48 hours, New York Republicans are threatening to impeach him. For what??? You can impeach public officials for high crimes. Hiring a prostitute falls more into the category of a low crime. (Incidentally, Spitzer hasn't actually been charged with anything.) This is another "do over" attempt to annul an election like the Bill Clinton impeachment or the Gray Davis recall. Even though Clinton and Davis deserved not to be reelected prior to these "do over" attempts, they would have lost if the Republicans hadn't put up such laughable opposition.

What's most amazing is that those who are demanding Spitzer's resignation let "Diaper Dave" Vitter get off completely for the exact same thing.

Oh, there's a difference alright between a Democratic sex scandal and a Republican sex scandal. A Republican one is worse, because the Republicans are more often the ones who are telling everyone else how to live their lives. When it comes to hypocrisy, the GOP has everyone else beaten hands down.

Contrast Spitzer's scandal with the Bush regime's war crimes, illegal eavesdropping, and election rigging. Where's the Democratic response to Bush's crimes after 7 years?

Judging by the public's negative reaction to the Clinton impeachment, New York Republicans may have just guaranteed themselves further losses by trying to impeach Eliot Spitzer. The Empire State may be the site of some Election Day laughs after all.
