Now this is some great news!
Who ever thought one of the most wingnuttery-plagued states would reject a private school voucher referendum by 2-to-1? Vouchers are losing in every county in the state, no less! The Salt Lake Tribune says the Big Business-backed proposal would have been "the country's broadest voucher program" because it would have been universal, applying everywhere in the state (not just in troubled school districts) and giving money not just to low-income students but to rich students as well. Naturally, right-wing Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. supported this fleecing by exclusive private schools - which is to be expected, since Huntsman is the jerk who vetoed the anti-Ritalin bill.
But now the idea is gone and disgraced. Of course, I'm sure it'll be back somewhere pretty soon, because this is one issue where the Freepers just have to have their way (even though it's been resoundingly rejected time and time again by the voting public).
