6 arrested for opposing war (a blast from the past)

I told you there'd be more stories like this that the dinosaur media droids continue to ignore, but you thought the foul taste of Bushism had finally been chased away, didn't you?

In Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2006, a major antiwar rally that featured several bands concluded with 6 arrests. The event, known as Human Rights Fest, had a permit allowing it to go on until midnight. But authorities ordered it closed down at 11 PM, despite the fact that the demonstration wasn't out of hand and the organizers were obeying the permit's rules. Several protesters were hit by tasers and had police guns pointed at their heads, even though they hadn't done anything wrong.

City bosses then planned to review whether the Action Center for Justice, the organization that conducted the rally, would be allowed to demonstrate in the future.

Um, I think the Constitution makes the answer to that pretty clear, don't you? If a group of Nazis in my area can block traffic by holding a rally in which they complain about the homeless having it too easy, then an antiwar group can conduct an antiwar event at a spot that's intended for rallies. Otherwise, let's stop kidding ourselves into thinking the rules are being enforced equally.

Truth of the matter is, if it was a pro-war event, the 6 people never would have been arrested. You know it, and I know it. There's a whole system in place to muzzle dissent (much of it because it hurts Bush's pwecious widdle feewings).

  1. Hi Tim, congratulations on topping 100 posts in January. This feat was noted on another web site. You're already well on your way this month. Keep up the good work.

Now onto this protest bust-up. I think the reason the media is ignoring it is because it happened in 2006. I work in the dinosaur media and we like to keep things relatively current. Generally not more than a day old.

As for why it happened, it sounds like you attended the event and wittnessed this first hand so I'll take your word for it that the protesters didn't become unruly and the cops were out of line. This is the sort thing that happens when Americans allow the government to erode constitutional liberties. And it doesn't matter which party is power, both of the major powerbrokers are doing it and will continue until we put a stop to it.

By the way, Tim, how was the concert before the police ruined it? Did you take any pictures?
