Sarkozy's party ignores EU referendum

Only 3 years ago, voters in France had a referendum in which they resoundingly voted against ratifying a proposed European Union constitution. Folks came to this stance for a variety of reasons: The treaty would undermine the country's sovereignty. It would also jeopardize France's protections of workers.

But now the Sarkozy regime - specifically, his right-wing party that controls the national legislature - has just decided to ignore the vote altogether. Knowing the treaty would lose if they actually let people vote on it again, Sarkozy sent it to his friends in Parliament instead of to the people. All this in the face of public demonstrations against the new constitution.

Talk about a Bush-like thing to do! Then again, this is the same Sarkozy who was virtually installed in office by Bush through his media friends that influenced that election. (If you don't think the American media can influence foreign elections, just ask folks in Canada and Germany.)
