Tough shit, UN

I'm not a knee-jerk ideologue who reflexively opposes everything the United Nations does, but this UN decree should not be allowed to stand.

The UN has become too friendly to right-wing causes - not just in international conflicts but even in intranational activities. The UN not only gives too much power to right-wing governments but also tries to exercise police powers over what individuals do in their personal lives.

Recently, marijuana vending machines were erected in California. Medical marijuana is legal in the Golden State - and you can only use the machines if you have a prescription for the herb. Inexplicably, however, the United Nations is sticking its nose into what goes on in California. The UN's International Narcotics Control Board claims the machines violate international treaties and that they need to be shut down. They've even urged U.S. authorities to raid California and put the machines out of commission.

Alright then, what's the UN's stance on tobacco vending machines? Cigarette machines proliferated wildly until about 15 years ago, but I don't remember the UN ever complaining about those. There's only about 3 marijuana machines, but there were thousands of cigarette machines!

A UN official cries that the marijuana machines "contravene the international drug control treaties."

Except they don't. In other words: Sorry, UN. You lose. Do not pass "Go." Do not collect $200. Do not take a ride on the Reading (or the Electric Company, for that matter). You just plain old lose, UN.
